<image:caption>The Gansey Girl sculpture celebrates East Yorkshire’s maritime heritage, the fishing industry and the local community. It was inspired by a photograph taken by a renowned nineteenth-century photographer from Whitby, Frank Meadow-Sutcliffe. She is sited on the North Pier at Bridlington, the fishermen can see the Gansey Girl as they set out to sea and as they return. The statue depicts a girl from a fishing family, who is knitting a gansey, which is a traditional fisherman’s heavy woollen sweater that was originally made on the Channel Island of Guernsey, hence the name ‘gansey’. The gansey was adopted by coastal areas on the British mainland with villages and families developing their own unique and distinctive patterns.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Hymek 50 event has marked 50 years since D7017 entered the preservation world under the auspices of the Diesel & Electric Group (D+EG) later to become the DEPG to be followed shortly after D7018.

The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group (The D&EPG) was formed in 1972 to promote interest in the modern railway scene. The start of the D+EG’s move to loco preservation happened aboard the railtour held to commemorate the end of the Beyer-Peacock ‘Class 35 Hymek’ diesel-hydraulic locos. The “Hymek Swansong” ran on Saturday 22nd September 1973. The idea materialised, details and monies being quickly collected. In July 1975, D7017 was purchased and towed to Taunton, before being transferred to Minehead on the West Somerset Railway (WSR) on 25th March 1976. The first train she hauled on the WSR was the “Quantock Flyer” on the 19th March 1977. Also in 1977, the Group was offered D7018. By May the transfer of ownership had taken place and the loco was duly moved to Didcot – the other base of the D+EG at that time. There was much work to do on D7018, including the engine being removed and repaired. The loco ran for the first time in preservation in August 1985.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Trotternish Ridge is Britain's longest and most spectacular landslip. The Storr is the highest point on the Trotternish Ridge (highest point 719 meters) and is a 300 meters thick sandwich of around 24 layers of volcanic rocks formed between 61 and 55 million years ago. It consists of huge volcanic buttresses and basalt cliffs that drop towards the sea, creating a landscape of beautiful und unique rock pinnacles. The 'Old Man of Storr' is the real symbol of Trotternish, and it is visible for 15 miles south and from the north. But there are more pinnacles around, such as the Sanctuary and not far away the pinnacles of the Quiraing. 63-53 million years ago (paleoscene to early eocene epochs (both early Tertiary)) there was volcanic activity on Skye (clearly seen at the Cuillins today) Those Tertiary lava flows on the Isle of Skye were generally only a few meters thick, and attain a maximum of around 35 meters. However, the overall thickness of the flows is great. They are the weathered remnants of what once covered a much wider area. The geomorphology of Trotternish is the result of erosion (past and present), on these Tertiary volcanic lavas and also, in some cases, on the underlying Jurassic sediments. These lava flows caused a landslip, falling away from the weaker Jurassic sediments beneath.</image:caption>

Sadly the relationship was never allowed to develop and Gwladus, tormented with sadness for her unrequited love, mysteriously became immortalised, her spirit flowing freely as this serene waterfall.

<image:caption>The Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway opened on Easter Monday, 7 April 1890 and has been in continuous use ever since.
It is the highest and the steepest totally water powered railway in the world!
The high cliffs separating Lynton and Lynmouth posed difficulties for the burgeoning tourist industry in the region in the early 19th century. Holidaymakers arrived at Lynmouth on paddle steamers from Bristol and Swansea and other ports in the Bristol Channel, from about 1820. Ponies, donkeys and carriages were available for hire, but the steep gradients led to the animals having short working lives. As the 19th century progressed, it was apparent that the cliffs were restricting the transport of goods between the villages and deterring prospective visitors.
In the late 19th century, interest arose in building a funicular or cliff lift to join them. The civil engineer George Croydon Marks played a key role in both its design and bringing in financing from his business partner, Sir George Newnes. Local contractor Robert Jones was involved in designing the funicular's innovative braking system and the line's construction and maintenance in the first decades of its operation.
In 1888, an Act of Parliament authorised the formation of the Lynmouth & Lynton Lift Company. It was given the perpetual rights to extract up to 272,760 litres of river water from the Lyn Valley per day
The water-powered railway was designed by civil engineer George Croydon Marks, who provided the company's engineering expertise. Its construction was financed mainly by his business partner, publisher Sir George Newnes who owned a large residence at Hollerday Hill and who also backed the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Now I'm living in North Devon, it gives access to some new locations, so last night I made the most of this mini heatwave and made a visit to the Valley of Rocks near Lynton. I have been to the Valley of Rocks before but not with the camera.
This was a gorgeously warm evening and a real sense of calmness abounded. Typically, it did not transpire due to a bank of cloud out over the horizon.
It was a relatively short steep walk to gain enough height to see Wringcliff Bay and the horizon over Rugged Jack and then it was that time for patience and wait for the sun to descend.
The couple in silhouette did ask if they were intruding in to my image but on this one I think they add that human touch, a couple enjoying watching the sun go down.</image:caption>

Dreaming of terrifying monsters,
Or of friendly tea beside the band at Cranston's or Crawford's:
Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh,
Asleep in granite Aberdeen,
They continue their dreams,
And shall wake soon and long for letters,
And none will hear the postman's knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Following a public meeting in 1890 to discuss an alternative method of communication between the two parts of Bridgnorth to the 200 steps between High Town and Low Town, a proposal to build a Patent Cliff Railway was put to the town council.
As with the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, it was engineered by George Croydon Marks with the bulk of the funding coming from Sir George Newnes.
The Bridgnorth Castle Hill Railway Company Ltd was registered in 1891, and construction started on 2 November 1891.
By a strange twist of fate, the cliff railway has come full circle and is now owned by cousins of George Croydon Marks.

<image:caption>he Trotternish Ridge is Britain's longest and most spectacular landslip.

<image:caption>Built in 1894, the Black Nore Point Lighthouse overlooks the Bristol Channel and Severn estuary. It was built by Trinity House to aid shipping as it approached the docks at Avonmouth and the River Severn. It has a tapered cylindrical skeletal tower with observation room, balcony and lantern. It juts out into the narrow channel, named "the Kings Road", which is the only passage connecting the port of Bristol with the open sea. For 116 years, through World Wars and countless storms, Black Nore Lighthouse has been marking the way for this critical sea passage. until it was decomissioned in 2010.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The remains of Wheal Jenkin with the Stamps Engine House to the left which would drive the 40 heads of stamps to crush the ore. To the right is the pumping engine house at Bellingham's Shaft.

The embankment of the Liskeard and Caradon mineral railway can be seen passing between the two engine houses which was built to convey the ores of copper and tin along with granite from the Caradon mining district to connect initially with the Liskeard and Looe Canal and later the Liskeard and Looe Railway.

Now forming part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, showing it's importance as part of the Industrial Revolution.

As quoted from the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site:

'Much of the landscape of Cornwall and West Devon was transformed in the 18th and early 19th centuries as a result of the rapid growth of pioneering copper and tin mining. Its deep underground mines, engine houses, foundries, new towns, smallholdings, ports and harbours, and their ancillary industries together reflect prolific innovation which, in the early 19th century, enabled the region to produce two-thirds of the world’s supply of copper. The substantial remains are a testimony to the contribution Cornwall and West Devon made to the Industrial Revolution in the rest of Britain and to the fundamental influence the area had on the mining world at large. Cornish technology embodied in engines, engine houses and mining equipment was exported around the world. Cornwall and West Devon were the heartland from which mining technology rapidly spread.'

<image:caption>The weather forecast for West Cornwall on the night in question, offered a glimmer of a hope for a comet photo and maybe a sunset with the cloud cover breaking for a few hours. So Plan A was to head to Botallack and the famous Crowns engine houses. This, unfortunately, was thwarted by a combination of the sea mist rolling and low cloud.
After living in Cornwall for 19 years, I have come to understand the nature of the area and the fact that there can be so many micro climates, so Plan B was initiated and I headed over towards Godrevy and yes, there was clear sky around but also quite a bit of broken cloud. With the tide coming in, I carefully selected my location and composition.
Patience is the key with any landscape/seascape photography. Whilst trying to work out which way the cloud was moving, it became obvious that it was actually fairly static but it was slowly starting to dissipate and this beautiful view came in to sight.

It's Thames tug boat, built in 1953 and named Cannis formerly Enticette . It was built for the London and Rochester Trading Co to tow the company’s barges between the Medway and the Thames
Now moored on the River Torridge near Appledore.</image:caption>

<image:caption>October - the new Summer.

A gorgeous afternoon, so for the first time in a long time, I ventured out to the coast and to an area I have only visited once before some years ago.
I had an idea in mind but that was not to be, the sun had crept round too far. So what ensued was a gentle meander around Pencarrow Head. This shot was just as I was heading back towards the car and as luck would have it I turned to look back the way I had come - Et voila.
All that was needed was some patience waiting for the scudding clouds to pass and the sun to illuminate the scene.</image:caption>
